Yet EVs are not maintenance-free. Their greater mass, up to 500 kg more than a petrol equivalent, and instant torque delivery mean front tyres on powerful rear-drive models can wear 20 percent faster than on a 1.5-litre turbo petrol. Regenerative braking cuts brake-pad and disc replacement to once every 60,000-100,000 miles, but in the damp British climate the seldom-used discs corrode quickly; a firm stop from 60 mph every couple of weeks restores the surface. The humble 12 V auxiliary battery remains the single biggest cause of roadside breakdowns, failing without warning in 40 percent of reported EV incidents according to AA data. The simplified EV service schedule

Most manufacturers recommend an annual health check even if no parts need swapping. This typically includes a full software diagnostic scan, inspection of high-voltage cables, and confirmation that the battery cooling system is free of debris. Cabin pollen filter replacement every 12 months or 15,000 miles costs £35-£55 and improves air quality in polluted urban commutes. Brake fluid must be renewed every two years regardless of mileage because it absorbs moisture; the job takes under an hour and prevents expensive corrosion inside the ABS module.

Coolant for the battery and power electronics is a sealed-for-life fluid on many models, yet some German and Korean makers still specify a drain-and-refill at 100,000 miles or eight years. The 12 V battery, which powers the lights, locks and infotainment, should be tested annually after the car reaches three years old. A replacement unit costs £90-£160 fitted and takes 20 minutes.

Tyres: the biggest consumable

EVs weigh more and deliver full torque from 0 rpm, so front tyres on 300 hp-plus models can lose 20 percent more tread than on an equivalent petrol car. Choosing tyres marked with the EV-specific logo ensures lower rolling resistance, which can add up to 12 miles of range, and reduced cabin noise at motorway speeds. Inflation pressures are typically 2-3 psi higher than on petrol cars to cope with the extra mass; under-inflation by only 4 psi can cut efficiency by 6 percent and accelerate shoulder wear.

Rotation every 6,000-8,000 miles is essential to even out wear. Brakes and regenerative braking

MOT, recalls and software

From the third anniversary every EV must pass an annual MOT that now includes checks on high-voltage cables, battery mounting and regenerative braking performance.
